On Friday, we lost Sam Berns,  a remarkable young man to Progeria . Sam, age 17,  was diagnosed at 22 months of age with Progeria, a rare, fatal genetic condition characterized by an appearance of accelerated aging in children.  Children with Progeria (about 350 worldwide) live an average of 13 years.
You may have heard of Sam’s story recently as HBO Documentaries broadcasted the story of Sam Berns in Life According to Sam  last fall. He also made an appearance on the Katie Couric Show and had a special relationship with Robert Kraft and the  New England Patriots. The Patriots had even invited Sam to be an honorary captain for last night’s divisional-round playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts.  They held a moment of silence at the start of the game in his honor.
Sam shared his philosophy for living a happy life at TEDxMidAtlantic in October 2013 which I wanted to share with this community.  Sam had wisdom far beyond his short life and an incredible human spirit.
Thank you Sam for your courage and inspiration.  You will surely be missed!!
